ADVOCACY:
In order to create a flourishing and sustainable environment for the arts in our community, it is vital that artists make their voice heard. A great first step in the process is taking the San José Survey of Artists' Resource Needs. If you are an individual artist who lives or works in the San José area, please take the survey now! Please visit http://www.cciarts.org/cep/index.htm to take the survey, or visit http://www.cciarts.org/cep/CEP_info_sheet.pdf  to download more information. This inititative is sponsored by the San José Office of Cultural Affairs and the Center for Cultural Innovation. The survey ends on June 6, 2008.

Performs September 25 – October 19, 2008
Genre: Farce. Cast: 5 men; 4 women
Synopsis: Noises Off presents the story of a hapless English acting troupe who are touring a production of a farce called Nothing On. Frayn has filled this “funniest farce ever” with lots of doors slamming, sexual dalliances, confusions, and, of course, plates of sardines. An unrivalled delight for anyone who thinks that falling down is funny, that underwear is outerwear, and that theatre is a metaphor for life itself.

Rapunzel or Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow by Marian Partee and Eric Hoit
& Holiday Vaudeville Revue
Rehearsals begin on or around September 27, 2008
Performs
November 20 – December 21, 2008
Genre: Satirical Operetta & Musical Revue. Cast: Flexible (must be able to sing and dance/move)
Synopsis: Will Prince Harry succeed in rescuing Rapunzel? Will Rapunzel be reunited with her family? Will somebody get a really bad haircut? Loads of laughs await the audience in this hilarious, irreverent, and satirical “fractured fairy tale.” Rounding out the evening is City Lights first-ever Holiday Musical Revue, filled with songs to warm the heart and tickle the funny-bone.

First Person Shooter by Aaron Loeb
Rehearsal begin on or around November 22, 2008
Performs January 22 – February 22, 2009
Genre: Drama. Cast: 4 men (2 White, 1 African-American, 1 Chinese-American); 2 women (any ethnicity)
Synopsis: After a Columbine-type shooting, the creator of a violent video game receives a letter from the shooter written just before his rampage and suicide, thanking him and his company for the “practice” that the game provided. A timely examination of culpability and responsibility, First Person Shooter asks the ultimate question: in a society in which violence has become a game, who is really at fault when the violence becomes all too real?

The Three Musketeers Freely adapted from the Dumas novel
by Associate Artistic Director Kit Wilder
Rehearsals begin on or around January 24, 2009
Performs March 19 – April 19, 2009
Genre: Period Romantic Swashbuckler/Adventure Classic. Cast: 12-14 men (with doubling); 4 women
Synopsis: The actors take the stage for the Dumas' swashbuckling tale of intrigue, friendship, love, and justice in 17th Century France, only to discover that their leading player is nowhere to be found. What to do? Only when a hapless stagehand is armed, costumed, and provided with a script can the show go on. And “go on” it does – with the company of seasoned actors guiding the novice page-by-page through the role of D'Artagnan, stepping in and out of character and changing scenes as quickly as the pages turn. Chock-full of dastardly deeds and derring-do, this rowdy and rollicking Musketeers is rapier-sharp – a swift and satisfying blend of high drama, low comedy, dark secrets, and heart-rending romance. And oh, those swordfights!

Stop Kiss by Diana Son
Rehearsals begin on or around March 21, 2009
Performs May 14 – June 14, 2009
Genre: Drama
Cast: 3 men; 3 women
Synopsis: A poignant play about the ways, both sudden and slow, that lives can change irrevocably. After Callie meets Sara, the two unexpectedly fall in love. Their first kiss provokes a violent attack that transforms their lives in a way they could never anticipate.

The Who's Tommy Music & Lyrics by Pete Townshend, Book by Pete Townshend & Des McAnuff (Pending licensing approval.)
Rehearsals begin on or around May 16, 2009
Performs July 16 – August 23, 2009 (possible extension to August 31)
Genre: Rock Opera. Cast: Large, diverse (all must sing; full dancing, singing ensemble)
Synopsis: City Lights presents this landmark rock opera in honor of the 40th anniversary of the original album's release. Young Tommy is striken deaf, dumb, and blind, and is deemed “incurable” by the medical sciences. Subsequently the victim of neglect and abuse, Tommy finds solace and triumph in his one true ability: playing pinball. When at last his mother “miraculously” cures him, Tommy becomes a cult icon, famous for his pinball skills and his “miraculous” recovery. But is the price of fame too high?
